Yesterday I had lunch with an old friend. I see Javi once a year (sometimes less) but it's always awesome to talk to him. We spoke about a lot of things, but I was especially inspired by how he has gone plastic free and makes his own bread, yogurt and toiletries.
The idea of doing a one year shopping ban has been in my head for a while now, especially since I read Cait Flander's The year of less, and I think now is the best time to do it, and learn more about my shopping habits, because I feel like recently I've been buying things I don't really need and eating a lot of food that's not good for me.
So, let's set up some rules, shall we?
What I am allowed to shop for:
- Groceries. Not including meat or fish. I'll try to avoid plastic as much as possible and buy in bulk when possible.
- White wine
- Shampoo, soap (only if I run out, and only eco-friendly). I'm going to try to make my own toothpowder and, if it turns out ok, I won't have to buy any of that.
- Toilet paper
- Cleaning products
- Gifts for others
- Massages, manicure, pedicure (I get one of these about twice a year and it's a nice way to treat myself)
What I am NOT allowed to shop for:
- Take out food (of any kind)
- Drinks (except white wine)
- Moisturizer, chapstick (I've got the supplies to make those myself), toothpaste (as I said, I'm going to try my hand at doing my own).
- Meat or fish
- Clothes, shoes, accessories
- Electronics, appliances (unless something breaks), books or stationery
I plan on keeping a list of what I've bought every week, I think it will be great to see that at the end of the year.
